Who Qualifies for Free Insulation Grants?
Free insulation grants are available through ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), but eligibility depends on your household, property, and income. The two schemes have different criteria, giving more homes a chance to qualify.
ECO4 Insulation Eligibility
ECO4 is designed to help low-income or vulnerable households in the least energy-efficient homes. You are likely to qualify if:
You own your home or privately rent (with landlord permission).
Your home has a low EPC rating of D, E, F, or G.
Your property has little or no existing insulation.
Someone in the household receives qualifying benefits, such as:
Pension Credit
Universal Credit
Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit
Income Support or Jobseeker’s Allowance
Employment & Support Allowance
Housing Benefit
Disability Benefits
ECO4 funding is completely free for those who meet the criteria, covering all installation costs in full.
Who Doesn’t Qualify?
Some households fall outside the scope of ECO4 and GBIS. You may not qualify if:
You live in social housing, unless your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G.
Your property already has modern, efficient insulation in place.
Your home has a high EPC rating (typically A-C).
If you don’t qualify for a grant, you can still access our paid insulation services for a straightforward way to upgrade your home.
GBIS Eligibility
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is broader, supporting households that don’t always receive benefits. You may qualify if:
Your home is in Council Tax band A-D in England or A-E in Scotland and Wales.
Your EPC rating is D or below.
You have a household income under £31,000
You do not already have adequate insulation installed.
GBIS grants can be fully funded or heavily subsidised. If a contribution is required, we’ll confirm the exact amount before installation begins.
