Insulation Grants

See what insulation funding your household could be entitled to.

Free Government Insulation Grants

You could qualify for free insulation through ECO4 or the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), giving your home a fully funded upgrade with no upfront cost. ECO4 provides completely free insulation for eligible households, while GBIS offers either free or heavily subsidised installs.

With professional loft, wall, or floor insulation, you can cut annual heating bills by up to £400, stop damp and mould at the source, and keep every room consistently warm. For many households, it’s the single most effective way to reduce energy waste and improve long-term comfort.

At Elite Energy, we’re accredited ECO4 and GBIS installers working nationwide. Our in-house team manages everything, from confirming your eligibility to fitting your insulation, with clear timelines, no hidden costs, and installation designed to last for decades.

Who Qualifies for Free Insulation Grants?

Free insulation grants are available through ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), but eligibility depends on your household, property, and income. The two schemes have different criteria, giving more homes a chance to qualify.

ECO4 Insulation Eligibility

ECO4 is designed to help low-income or vulnerable households in the least energy-efficient homes. You are likely to qualify if:

  • You own your home or privately rent (with landlord permission).

  • Your home has a low EPC rating of D, E, F, or G.

  • Your property has little or no existing insulation.

  • Someone in the household receives qualifying benefits, such as:

    • Pension Credit

    • Universal Credit

    • Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit

    • Income Support or Jobseeker’s Allowance

    • Employment & Support Allowance

    • Housing Benefit

    • Disability Benefits

ECO4 funding is completely free for those who meet the criteria, covering all installation costs in full.

Who Doesn’t Qualify?

Some households fall outside the scope of ECO4 and GBIS. You may not qualify if:

  • You live in social housing, unless your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G.

  • Your property already has modern, efficient insulation in place.

  • Your home has a high EPC rating (typically A-C).

If you don’t qualify for a grant, you can still access our paid insulation services for a straightforward way to upgrade your home.

GBIS Eligibility

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is broader, supporting households that don’t always receive benefits. You may qualify if:

  • Your home is in Council Tax band A-D in England or A-E in Scotland and Wales.

  • Your EPC rating is D or below.

  • You have a household income under £31,000

  • You do not already have adequate insulation installed.

GBIS grants can be fully funded or heavily subsidised. If a contribution is required, we’ll confirm the exact amount before installation begins.

  • Your local council has opted into GBIS Flex

If you don’t qualify for a grant, you can still access our paid insulation services for a straightforward way to upgrade your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

We have tried to answer most questions here but if you have any other queries please feel free to contact us!

How long does home insulation last before it needs replacing?

Most insulation materials, such as loft rolls or cavity wall fill, last 25-40 years without losing effectiveness. In many cases, they’ll remain in place for the lifetime of the property, especially when professionally installed.

Will insulation make my home too warm in summer?

No. Insulation works both ways, it prevents heat escaping in winter and stops excess warmth entering in summer. This helps keep your home at a stable, comfortable temperature all year round.

Can insulation reduce noise from neighbours or outside traffic?

Yes. Internal and external wall insulation both provide soundproofing benefits, reducing airborne noise such as traffic or neighbour activity. This is often an added advantage for homes in busy or built-up areas.

How disruptive is underfloor insulation compared to wall or loft installs?

Underfloor insulation can take slightly longer, as floorboards or crawl spaces need access, but our team completes this with minimal disruption. We also ensure your flooring is reinstated properly once installation is finished.

Is planning permission required for external wall insulation?

In most cases, no. However, if you live in a listed property or conservation area, permission may be needed. We’ll confirm this for you before starting any work.

Can insulation improve my EPC rating for rental compliance?

Yes. Insulation is one of the most effective upgrades for boosting your EPC score. Landlords often use it to meet the government’s Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) for rental properties.

How do I maintain insulation once it’s installed?

Most insulation requires little to no upkeep. For loft insulation, avoid compressing it with heavy storage items. With cavity and wall insulation, simply ensure good ventilation to prevent condensation. Our team provides care guidance after installation.

What happens if my property needs more than one type of insulation?

Many homes lose heat from multiple areas such as the loft, walls, and floors. Under ECO4, several insulation measures can be combined if needed to meet energy efficiency targets. GBIS is more limited, usually funding a single measure, but our team advises on the best route to maximise coverage.

What if my home already has some insulation?

You may still qualify. ECO4 focuses on upgrading homes with poor energy performance, so if your insulation is outdated, damaged, or insufficient, you could be eligible for a replacement. GBIS may also provide support for partial improvements where efficiency is below standard.
